Do Antacids Help Gas?
Understanding Heartburn, Gas, and How to Get Relief
What Causes Gas?
We all know the feeling of being gassy or bloated – that uncomfortable pressure in your stomach when you have too much gas. So what causes gas and bloating? Gas can happen when you swallow air while eating or drinking, especially if you eat very fast, talk while you eat, or drink through a straw. Gas also forms when the food you eat is broken down in your digestive system. In fact, tiny bacteria in your intestines help digest food, but in doing so they make gas as a byproduct². This gas can build up, stretching your belly and making it feel full and tight (bloating)¹. Swallowed air often leaves your stomach by belching (burping). Gas produced further down in your gut usually comes out as a flatulence. There are also many foods that cause gas and bloating. Common culprits include beans, certain vegetables like broccoli or cabbage, high-fiber foods, carbonated (fizzy) drinks, and dairy products if you’re lactose intolerant. Eating a large meal can make you feel bloated too. While having gas is usually not dangerous, it can be annoying or embarrassing, so lots of people look for ways to get gas and bloating relief.
Do Antacids Help with Gas?
If you’ve ever had heartburn, you might have taken an antacid for quick relief. Antacids are medicines that neutralize excess stomach acid, helping with heartburn and Acid indigestion by making your stomach less acidic3. They can give fast heartburn relief when you have acid burning your esophagus. But what if you’re dealing with gassiness—do antacids help with gas and bloating? The answer is not really, unless the antacid also has an ingredient for gas. Regular antacids are great for heartburn but do not do much for gas or bloating. This is because gas isn’t caused by acid, so neutralizing acid doesn’t make the gas go away. However, some antacid products are made to tackle both heartburn and gas (Rolaids® Heartburn + Gas). These are sometimes called anti-gas antacids or dual-action formulas. They still have the usual antacid ingredients (like calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide) to handle heartburn fast and effectively, but they also add an extra ingredient to help get rid of gas. One example is Rolaids® Heartburn + Gas, a 2-in-1 antacid that contains calcium carbonate + magnesium hydroxide (a dual-active antacid) plus simethicone for gas relief. Thanks to simethicone, Rolaids Heartburn + Gas specifically relieves “fullness, pressure, and bloating commonly referred to as gas” as well as heartburn5. So in summary: taking a plain antacid alone won’t really help with gas. But an antacid that includes an anti-gas ingredient (like simethicone) will help with gas symptoms by breaking up gas trapped in bubbles so the body can let it out.
How Antacids Work for Acid vs Gas
Let’s break down the difference between how antacids handle acid vs gas. Antacids work on stomach acid: They contain alkaline compounds (bases such as calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, etc.) that neutralize stomach acid on contact. By doing this, they relieve that burning feeling of heartburn quickly. In fact, antacids start to neutralize acid the moment they come in contact with it, which is why you can start to feel better within minutes. They neutralize the acid, making your stomach acid less corrosive as it moves closer to the pH of water. This is why they are called antacids because they turn acid into a more neutral state. Also, how they provide fast-acting relief of heartburn and acid indigestion.
Now, what about gas? Gas bubbles in your stomach or intestines are not acidic fluid; they’re usually air or gases from food breakdown, like carbon dioxide. Regular antacids by themselves don’t have a way to get rid of gas – they don’t absorb it or break it down. That’s why an additional medicine called simethicone is used for gas relief. Simethicone doesn’t neutralize acid at all; instead, it acts like a defoamer to make gas bubbles burst or join together. Simethicone causes smaller bubbles to combine into bigger bubbles these big bubbles the body can expel more easily by burping or passing gas5. This helps ease pressure, bloating, and that gurgling feeling from gas. Some antacids for gas and bloating (like Rolaids Heartburn + Gas) include simethicone right in the tablet, so you get the dual benefit: the antacid part neutralizes acid (stopping heartburn), and the simethicone part fights gas (reducing bloating).
What Antacids Cannot Do
While antacids can be wonderful for quick relief of heartburn and minor stomach upset, it’s important to know their limits. Antacids are a temporary fix to neutralize existing acid and provide relief for up to 4 hours. Also, antacids don’t address serious digestive problems. They cannot “cure” chronic issues. If you have frequent heartburn, two or more times per week, you should see a healthcare provider6. Taking antacids, all the time (daily or for more than two weeks) is not recommended; it might be masking an underlying problem that needs medical care3. Overall, use antacids wisely for what they’re best at: relieving heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and upset stomach from excess stomach acid (they neutralize excess stomach acid for fast and reliable heartburn relief). For gas and bloating relief, consider antacids that include simethicone or other specific anti-gas remedies when needed.
