Heart Burn

This little hothead is actually irritation of the esophagus caused by acid seeping up from the stomach and creating a burning sensation in the chest or throat.
Contributing factors:
  • Overeating
  • Tomatoes, citrus fruits, garlic, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, caffeine
  • Fatty, oily foods
  • Stress
  • Smoking

Tips

Here are some simple ways to help minimize discomfort without giving up the things you love to eat:

Stay vertical

Lying down too soon after a meal can leave you prone to discomfort. Keep moving and your body's digestive system will, too.

Hang loose

Avoid tight-fitting clothes that can restrict blood flow and inhibit digestion.

Practice moderation

Excessive food, alcohol and caffeine can get you in trouble. Slower, smaller meals and less of the foods that set you off can help mightily.

Get fit

Maintaining a healthy weight has a huge impact on overall health – including keeping heartburn at bay.
